Your
right to privacy is only as good as the people who handle your
medical data. This could be your physician, the hospital, your
dentist, pharmacy, insurance company, or any health care provider you
visit! You may not want your medical history broadcast to the world,
and surely not to the insurance company!
Insurance
companies use "underwriting standards" to determine whether
they will issue the requested customer policy, and what the price
will be! After they evaluate you they will determine how much of a
risk you really are! The underwriters gather all the information they
can based on your history and determine your risk, and it's cost!
Calculating Their Risk and Your Premium Cost!
Years ago the insurance companies formed a group membership and began building databases of peoples medical records. The organization was called the Medical Information Bureau. Today it is simply called the MIB and the insurers have grown to nearly 500 members. When you apply for medical, Life, Long Term Care, or any insurance of this type, the underwriter looks at the data provided by the MIB to determine your premium cost!

Federal Laws Protecting Consumers!
Federal agencies like The Office for Civil Rights (OCR), The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and laws set aside by (HIPAA) Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, have assured that all individuals should have the right to their own medical records!

Some States have also adopted laws specifically dealing with the
confidentiality of medical records. The MIB and member companies
doing business in those states are also subject to those laws. At
present, the MIB database contains the files of about 18 million
individuals. The easiest way for you to check to see if the MIB has a
file on you, and whether that file is accurate or not, is to request
a copy of your record from MIB.com. You may request one free
copy of your report (if one exists) once a year!
How To Get Your Records!
To get these records, download and print the Pdf form just as you did for the credit report and fill it out accurately! If you find there are discrepancies in your report, just like the credit report, you also have the right to challenge and correct them!
